I wish there was a way for small investors, such as myself, to invest directly into a community solar project, receive a return based on the energy that is produced, and get the tax benefits associated with solar. Unfortunately, only wealthy “accredited investors” are allowed to invest directly into solar projects. These projects produce steady returns for investors. Instead, the small investor must settle for buying stocks of volatile solar companies that do not actually derive profit from the production of electricity.) If small investors are allowed to profit from producing solar energy, these small investors would be getting returns higher than what they could get from investments of similar risk, and provide capital for solar projects that would probably be at a lower financing cost than banks. This would open a flood of relatively cheap money and increase the momentum for building more solar energy projects. |
